Speaking this month for Central (7/16) and North (7/17) is Mike Byrd.

SQL Server Foreign Keys - De-mystifying the Rest of the Story

Foreign Keys have a bad rap - they cause performance issues, they inhibit some inserts, deletes and updates, etc. This may be true, but let's further explore why we even have them and how they can benefit and maybe even improve performance. This session will concentrate on many demos including the attributes associated with foreign keys. The attendee will walk away from this session with a better understanding of Foreign Key utility and their maintenance.

Fundamentals of SAN, NAS and IP Storage
SAN's and NAS's have their own challenges but also open up a whole new set of tools for disaster recovery and high availability. We will touch on the basics that can be applied to most SAN's and talk about strategies for setting up your storage. We will also cover what makes up a Storage Area Network and what seperates Network Attached Storage from SAN's and how iSCSI fits into this picture.

We might know how to tune a query for optimal performance or create additional indexes to ensure faster execution, but how do we ensure that our changes don’t hurt our total workload?  Do we know if the new 3rd Party application upgrade will make performance better or worse? Do we know if your application can scale due to unexpected stress? In this session, we will go over a process used to tune a workload and answer the common questions above. In this presentation we will also use RML Utilities to answer these questions and even give you a little insight into how you can document these changes to help you get that next raise.

Jim Murphy will be presenting
Mission Possible: Interactive Performance Troubleshooting -  Indexes

Abstract:
Performance troubleshooting is detective work. We'll have a lab system being assaulted by PowerShell scripts  (to simulate live users), and simulated performance problems like those that can make your on-call cell phone ring too much! Do you think you have what it takes to find these "needle in the haystack" issues and resolve them quickly?  This will be a highly interactive session where we will locate the rogue queries together, work through solutions, implement them and measure the results.  In this episode we'll focus primarily on improper indexing as a common underlying problem. We'll go through as many scenarios as will fit in 1.5h, and all will walk away with much better troubleshooting skills and an upgraded knowledge of performance tuning!  200-300 Level. Skills Used: DM's, Exec Plans, Perfmon, etc.

Bio:
Jim Murphy has been using Microsoft SQL Server since version 6.0 back in the 90's. He is the President/CEO of SQLWatchmen, LLC., a managed DBA service provider for smaller companies who do not need a full-time DBA. He runs the Austin SQL Server User Group: CACTUSS Central and sits on the board of SQLPOSSE.com. Steven will present at both our Central and North meetings. So, come to the meeting to connect, share, and learn from a Microsoft Certified Master.

Speeding Up Aggregations with Indexed Views

Do you have a report that’s taking too long? Is the CEO standing over your desk asking when it will be done? If your queries rely on complex aggregations then you may be able to speed things up with a few well-placed indexes and indexed views. In this demo-centric session, we’ll look into query plans to identify the tell-tale signs of an Aggravating Aggregation. First, we’ll see how we can use standard indexes in order to speed things up. Then, we’ll take it up a notch by adding Indexed Views to make things even faster. On Monday, you’ll be armed with CEO Kryptonite that will leave you plenty of time to read blogs all day.

Come get a first hand look at his Summit 2013 session.

Table Partitioning: Secret Weapon for Big Data Problems

Big Data starting to slow you down? Data growth putting your maintenance tasks in danger of not meeting your SLAs? Wish you could archive old data with minimal impact to your tables during the archive process or that you could eliminate most of the data in your tables when you query them? If so, it's time you consider implementing table partitioning to help with general performance and reduce your window for completing maintenance tasks.

Come learn how table partitioning works and when it should be implemented. You'll see how to initially configure partition functions and partition schemes to have a rock-solid partitioned table. And you'll learn how to implement an automated sliding window to maintain your partitioned tables and ensure optimal performance.

You will walk away from this session with an understanding of how to use the Policy Based Management and Central Management Server to complete a daily checklist against your whole SQL Server farm. We will cover the basics to evaluate, monitor and apply best practice policies, which are included out of the box with SQL Server 2008. We will also make custom policies to cover additional best practices to evaluate daily checklist items. Finally, we will combine Policy-Based Management and Central Management Server with the Enterprise Policy Management Framework on codeplex to automate the monitoring process and create manager friendly reports to monitor your checklist items against the whole SQL Server farm.

Window Functions 101
What are they and why should I care?

If I had to name one concept in standard SQL that I thought was the most important one...
I'd say window functions, hands down, without a doubt.
-- Itzik Ben-Gan

My goal is for everyone to leave with both the knowledge and passion to use window functions in your current projects. Since most people haven't upgraded to 2012 all the examples will be in SQL Server 2008 R2.
We won't begin to cover all the nuances and syntax but rather will focus on a few simple and useful examples with broad application.

Note:  In a future talk I'll expand on this to discuss SQL Server 2012's additional functions and the syntax variations.

John Rutherford will be presenting this month on

PowerShell and SQL Server

PowerShell is a powerful tool that Microsoft is committed to integrating into all of it's server products and SQL Server is no exception. This presentation will not spend too much time on basic PowerShell commands but rather show you how you can use it to help administer and maintain multiple SQL Servers. I will show you some demos of how you can start using PowerShell to talk to your existing SQL servers. You do not need any previous PowerShell experience to understand the concepts and demos in this presentation.

John Rutherford is an IT Manager/Database Administrator for a mid-sized Orthopedics company and currently maintains 75 MS SQL Servers . He has been working with Database Systems since he started in IT over 14 years ago and has been working with MS SQL Server for the past 3 years. He has been working with various programming/scripting languages his entire career but has only this year discovered PowerShell and started to use it in conjunction with SQL Server.

AlwaysOn - Finally, A usable 'mirror'!

In the past, High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HADR) had many limitations. Clustering and Mirroring are great, but the mirror/secondary database is not very usable since it is not online. Finally, AlwaysOn solves this limitation by merging both multi-node Clustering and mirroring. AlwaysOn also allows the secondary database to remain ONLINE, so we can use it for reporting purposes without resorting to a Snapshot! Come see this lively session with extensive demos of setting up, configuring and testing AlwaysOn. We'll also test automatic fail-over using a real web app to see how well this feature works.
